One of the fastest growing companies in the world

Catawiki was founded in 2008 by comic book collector René Schoenmakers and developer Marco Jansen. Unsurprisingly, the name Catawiki is a combination of the words ‘catalogue’ and ‘wiki’. In 2011, Catawiki began hosting weekly auctions in various categories, including art, antiques, classic cars, watches, jewellery, fashion, books, and stamps.

The success story

Catawiki was originally designed as a website where collectors could manage and keep track of their collections online. Co-founder René Schoenmakers, an avid comic book collector thought buying comics from eBay was too much of a hassle, and when the two turned it into their own auction website for rare collectors items, things took off fast.

The company landed a total of almost €75 million in investments and officially became the fastest growing company in Europe in 2016, with a whopping growth of 45,000% in just four years. Catawiki now has more than 300 auctions every week and around 14 million monthly visitors.

Did you know?

You can find all sorts of awesome and crazy collectors items for sale on Catawiki, ranging from an actual Tyrannosaurus Rex jawbone, to the most expensive Lego Star Wars Millennium Falcon ever sold, all the way up to a strand of Napoleon’s hair.

Founders René and Marco weren’t really looking for another round of investments, when US investment firm Lead Edge Capital (who also invested in companies like Spotify and Uber) contacted them. When they initially declined, the people at Lead Edge told them they already bought their plane tickets and that’s how Catawiki landed a €75 million investment.

What makes Catawiki awesome?

One of the fastest growing companies in the world, Catawiki is an online auction platform for niche collectors items. Originally from Assen, a 15 minute train ride from Groningen, the company now has offices in the UK, France, Germany, Spain and Italy and employs more than 500 people.
