functional designer @ DUO

Marloes studied industrial engineering at the University of Groningen and started working for DUO as an functional designer since September, 2018.

So many possibilities
“I didn’t really know what I wanted to do after graduating. Industrial engineering is very broad, so what is something that I’d really like to do? I was at a job fair and just happened to walk past the DUO stand. They offered a lot of different jobs and I signed up for a masterclass, which is sort of like a month long traineeship, and it was a great way to just figure out what I wanted to do and what I could do.”

Informal atmosphere
“I started working as a functional designer at DUO’s data warehouse. I’ve only been working there for a few months, but I really love the informal atmosphere. Everyone is really open and ready to help out with just about anything. If I have a question about something, there’s always someone to go to, even if they work in a different department.
What I also really like, is that you get a lot of opportunities to grow, specialize and just learn new skills. You also get time to develop yourself or do or learn something completely different.”

Much more international
“Groningen is a great place to live and work and I’ve built a life here, so there’s absolutely no reason for me to leave. You have all the amenities of a large city, but it’s cozy and friendly and everything you need is just close by.
“The city has also become much more international in recent years, which is really cool. There are a lot of new and young companies, so there are also a lot of job opportunities. But Groningen has still retained that intimate and friendly character, which is something I really like.”
